If your pdfs are opening in Acrobat Reader, you need to select a pdf

go into the menus and select getinfo and change the default application

open pdfs to preview; there's a popup menu for this within the getinfo
dialog and a checkbox for always opening in the app you've changed to.

can still choose to open a file in acrobat reader easily enough via the
menus if you need to do this sometimes. In preview you will be able to
read the pdfs though even in preview you will find some that don't work.
also, if you by visiovoice, you can listen to pdfs in visiovoice or
convert
them to audio files.
