You should probably turn it back on, though, if you're dealing with something like emacs or pine.
The only thing I'd add to those suggestions is, I've found it's
helpful when using basic command line stuff to turn off cursor
tracking. That way, when you type something like ls, you're at the
top of the output rather than the bottom, which to me makes things a
bit easier to deal with.
