Well, an interesting parallel can be made between the evolution
of Windows and JAWS. Basically, JFW achieved the greater market
share on pure marketing in the same ways as Windows did. Also,
consider the impact Window-Eyes is having in the same way the Mac is
having. You still have staunch, entrenched JAWS and Windows users
who won't admit the proverbial ship is sinking until the water is
above their heads and they have to swim for their computer lives.
As a side note, I really stumbled upon Window-Eyes out of
desperation. I had gone to Window Bridge as an alternative to JAWS,
but when that' product's developer passed away, I needed an
alternative one. What is different for me is I always wanted to use
a Mac in the first place, but there were no Outspoken users I knew
and I ended up getting caught up in the Windows tide. VoiceOver came
around, and, well, my alternative to computing had arrived.

Its really interesting to hear both Josh and John say that they think
Window Eyes is a superior product. I know several JFW users who would
agree with you though there are many in Ireland who have just never
got
to use WE as for some reason nearly every one here uses JFW. WE is
also
much cheaper.
Some refer to the whole clinging onto Windows-come-hell-or-high-water
thing as a kind of Stockholm syndrome side effect.
