There has been a great deal of work done to get various displays
working under LINUX and BSD UNIX. The underlying OS of the Mac is BSD
UNIX so any good software engineer could take the work done for one of
those systems and get it working on a Mac. Also you could simply
revers engineer the device. While having the help of the manufacturer
would be nice it isn't required there are only so many way to drive a
braille display and a skilled hardware engineer will be able to figure
it out rather quickly.
Yes they told me that PacMates had been sent to Apple so I would
assume there other displays have been sent as well. I think we would
do well to remember that many of the people who work the ACB and NFB
conventions for Freedom are not employee of Freedom but are often
independent sales agents who may not be aquatinted with the internal
functions of the company.

Hi Greg,
The fact is that while cooperation of the makers of braille display
would be helpful in making the drivers needed in the Mac it is not
absolutely required and Apple engineers could support any device
with or without the consent and help of the manufacturer.
How is that possilble.
Also, I seem to remember you saying in a messge to the list, that
Freedom Scientific had sent PacMates and displays is that right?
Take care
