Upgrading memory on an Imac

Ok, I just want to confirm something. Is it true that the Imac can  
only take 3 gig of memory, the 1 gig chip which is already installed  
plus another 2 gig chip or can you have 2 2 gig chips.
Second, where is the memory door to gain access to the memory? The  
manual tdescribes this but doesn't exactly tell you where it is.
