      I just tried this and I am also using iChatter.  When you open iChat
preferences, tab until you get to the alerts button.  Hit spacebar on that.
Tab again until you come to a pop up button that  
says something like, when I log in.  This is the event pop up button.   
If you hit spacebar there, you can arrow down to the other events.   
When you tab from any event, there is a checkbox to have that alert make a
sound.
