Hi all, I don't usually contribute on here, so thanks for allowing me to do 
so. Anyway, from a general computing point of view, you should *only* format 
any media, including thumb drives, hard drives, etc, if the file system 
becomes seriously corrupted. True, it erases all the data, but unless you 
can fork out money for data recovery, you might as well lose data to get 
your media working proper again. Just some thoughts there.

I have not had to reformat or erase my Kingston thumb drive yet. All I do is
'command+a' to select all, then hit the delete key and I have a clean thumb
drive with the original amount of space on it. Have been doing this for
about 3 years now and it always seem to work for me.
