drive playing up

hi

ok i lost everything on this backup drive today after fruitlessly  
trying to get it to work under windows. so i formatted my lacey 250  
gigabyte drive under mac os x and said i wanted it to be ms dos fat
so now when i plug it in to the windows side of the mac before i go to  
windows perminantly i need to see if it works, and it won't show up  
what please am i doing wrong. i thought if it was fat 32 windows could  
read it
