this does not work for me unless I interact with the text first and then it will only allow me to select a "group" even if groups are turned off at a time.

Do a VO return to start selecting text, then you move the VO cursor over the text you want, then do another VO enter to stop selecting. You can then do a command c to copy the text, and then you can do whatever you want with it.
