Hi Joshua. What many of us do is run our own jabber servers. We use
them simply for the gateways. There's going to be a guide written up
on doing this for VO users. But until that happens, you can check out

It probably sounds much more complex then it actually is. I had it up
and running in about fifteen minutes.
