Hi Michael,

If your hardware volume up (F5 key) doesn't affect things and you're not
muted, try looking at your Audio Output volume settings in the Audio MIDI
Setup menu under your Utilities folder (Shift+Command+U under Finder).

Use the item chooser menu to first select the Audio Devices tab. Then, on
that tab use item chooser to look for Audio Output and VO-keys down arrow
to the table for the output entries. Interact, and check that the sliders for
the
left and right volume outputs are each set to 100 per cent.

Audio MIDI Setup isn't something you'd ever think about checking, but the
input and output settings can affect your audio quality and also the quality
of your recordings.

(I found out about this when I was reading reviews about the iMic a long time
ago. This is a device to allow you to record audio on computers with no
line-in -- like the iBooks. It turned out that there were a bunch of reviews
complaining about the horrible quality of recordings that appeared all of
a sudden, and then someone pointed out that the reason was that a recent
Mac OS X system update had somehow set the audio input settings under
the Audio MIDI setup to a really low bit rate and unbalanced input volume.
Weird, but it did mean that this is one more thing you can tweak.)

Incidentally, this is not the solution to people who are complaining about
the low volume on some of the new Macbooks. That genuinely does seem
to be true for some models.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Esther
