actually, the firewall on the mac is integrated through the system and bits of it can be tweeked or the whole thing can be turned on and off. what happens is when you get a new mac, all the sharing functions are disabled in effect, the firewall for incoming traffic is shut. As you open ports and configure sharing, you open up parts of the firewall. If you want, you can go to security in system prefs and turn it all off.
