Selecting messages in mail?

Hi all, if for example I had an email message which I did not want to  
read and just delete, is there  a simple way of doing that?  I can  
get to the delete button on hte  toolbar, , but my problem is being  
able to select messages for deletion.  Hope that's not a stupid, dumb  
question lol.  Currently running tiger to  get used to things,  
haven't installed Leopard yet, probably will in a week or so.
