Hi
No, you're not missing some components.
First, you *must* double click the buttons in the preferences toolbar. This will cause the area to change. To set up an output format, under the formats preferences. there is a table, two unlabeled buttons, an encoder settings button, and another table. As with most unlabeled buttons near a table, the first button is an add button and the second one a remove button. To set up an output format: Go to the second table and select the desired format, then press the first unlabeled button (the add button). You can then configure it. Once configured it will show up in the first table, which is your configured formats. Any formats in this table that you have checked will be produced when you rip a cd or do any other sort of conversion.

I downloaded max 0.7.1 and opened it and copied the application file; also read the readme file. I am having problems.

1. In preferences, no matter how I press the buttons in the toolbar, I can only get the general area.

2. I can select files for copying but the table for desired output formats is blank and pressing the setup output formats button either does nothing or once when I used vokeys-shift-space on it I ended up in preferences but couldn't get past general just like before. There are two unlabelled buttons. Convert is of course dimmed since i havent selected output formats. Am I missing some components here or what is the problem?
