Hi Jed,
You asked: I want to import music in to my library. I have 4 major
folders of music.
They are called. 1970s 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s
OK, so i want to create a playlist for each folder, so in case i
want to bring up all of my 80s.
TK: I would import each folder separately, then do the following. In
this situation, I am assuming that all the tags for Genre and such
aren't necessarily there. So:
• Open iTunes.
• Press cmd-o for Add to Library.
• Navigate to the folder for 70s, let's say.
• Stop Interacting With the file Table.
• Navigate to the Open button.
All the files will be copied into your itunes Music folder. If these
are the only songs in your iTunes Library, then Interact With the
Songs Table, press cmd-a to Select All, then press cmd-shift-n to
create a New Playlist from Selection. type a name for the Playlist
such as 1970s and it's all good.
Now, when you bring in the 80s music there will already exist all the
70s music so we'll have to do some sneaky stuff. Do the same process
as above for importing the 80s music. Then go to your Sources Table
and make sure it's on the Music Library, then go to your songs Table
and press cmd-j to bring up the View Options. Navigate through all
the choices until you find the checkbox for "date Added" and check
it. Press return to "OK" the View Options. Now, make sure that you
are Interacting With the songs Table, navigate right until you find
the "Date Added" column and press VO-shift-back slash. This will sort
your Songs Table according to the date that the songs were added.
Since you added the 80s music after the 70s music the time stamp will
be slightly newer. Navigate through that column using VO-up or VO-
down, make sure it's with the VO keys otherwise you'll have to listen
to the whole columns info. Once you've located the first item with a
different "Date Added" stamp than the ones at the top of the list,
you'll know you've got to the 70s music. So, make sure you're on the
last 80s music song, then hold down your shift key and start arrowing
up until VO keeps saying the same number of selected items. That is,
VO will say 2 items selected, 3 items selected and so on but will
repeat the same number once you've reached the top. Now that you have
all the 80s selected, press cmd-shift-n to create a New Playlist from
Selection. Name it and its done. Note though, if the sort direction
happens to go the opposite to what I've explained above, you'll have
to substitute up for down and down for up so that you'll be selecting
the correct group of songs.
You should be able to repeat this process for your 90s and 2000s. You
may also wish to perform a multiple Tag fix. I would do this by going
to one of the new playlists in your Sources Table to select it and
thus display the songs that belong to that playlist. Stop Interacting
With it, then navigating to the Songs Table, Interacting With it then
pressing cmd-i to Get Info on the whole playlist. Navigate through
the fields until you find the Genre edit field and type in a Genre for
this group of songs. This will make things much easier for organizing
in the future for you.
Hope this wasn't too confusing. Good luck.
