Yes, the airport express can work with an existing router. When you
set up the airport express, the program asks you if you want the
airport to set up its own network, or join an existing network.

There is really nothing that needs to be accessible with Air
Tunes. Basically, it's just a router you can use to create a
network or join an existing one. You run the Airport Utility to
configure it, and once you have it set up, it works through
iTunes. I have really enjoyed it.
