Hi,

This probably isn't the cause, but I'd double check your finder preferences and make sure that all the different drive type options are checked and are set to appear on your desktop. (There is a specific checkbox for external drives there.)

You can use Finder. If the drive doesn't appear automatically in
your sidebar, use the shortcut Shift+Command+G (for go to folder),
type in "/Volumes" (without the quote marks), and return.  You
should get a list of mounted drives, like "Macintosh HD" and others.
