sorry, I thought he was using apple mail. In your case, by default, mail is not set to move deleted messages to a separate folder which is the trash mailbox if you check the box. It is confusing, but that is where it is. what happens if you delete your mail and then close and reopen mail? if it's still there, you need to rebuild the mailbox unless you have a setting in mailbox behaviour in mail prefs accounts not to delete messages at all.
