I tried both Yahoo mail classic and the regular version of mail, with
the same result. That is, VO does not speak the links to the
individual messages. I have been using VO with grouped items, but
that was never a problem until recently. I'm using Tiger. Again, that
was not a problem before.

When you say "links to my messages", do you mean the links to each
individual message from the inbox? Would you be able to provide
some reproducible steps to get to the problem?
Do you know whether you're accessing generic Yahoo! Mail, or a
particular flavour (that is, through one of Yahoo!'s parterships
like AT&T in the USA, Rogers in Canada, and BT in the United Kingdom)?
Also do you know whether you're currently using Yahoo! Mail Classic
(also called Yahoo! Mail Original) or the new Yahoo! Mail?
What version of OS X and what version of Safari are you using?
In your VoiceOver settings, are you navigating webpages using the
Group method or the DOM method?
