For a couple of years now, I have been in communication with
Ultralingua regarding accessibility of their multilingual electronic
dictionary. I have always been interested in foreign languages, and a
lack of accessible electronic materials and reference books has been
causing me a lot of grief. As soon as I chanced upon Ultralingua when
I was still only working under Windows, I purchased it and tried it. I
soon realised that it was only very partially accessible. I resolved
to write to Ultralingua and apply some gentle pressure.
I found the management of Ultralingua very receptive to the
accessibility issues, and since then they have been working hard on
their product. As soon as I switched to Mac, I contacted them again
and informed them of the problems that their product caused to blind
users on the Mac platform. Again, ultralingua have proved to be
receptive.
A few weeks ago, Ultralingua asked me and Anne Robertson to test their
ultralingua 7 for Mac. I did so, and sent some comments back to them.
They acted upon them.
Ultralingua has just issued an anouncement of their version 7. (see
the forwarded newsletter below). I am informed by the producer that
this version is now officiallly accessible.
To all those blind users who are students of foreign languages, this
product may prove very useful. Especially those who use refreshable
braille or Visiovoice may find it very good. Please inform as many
people as you know about Ultralingua and its accesssibility. Please
note that this version is currently accessible only for Mac and not
for Windows. ultralingua are stil working on the accessibility of the
Windows version so please make it clear to all those to whom you speak
of this exciting product. If you belong to any other discussion
groups, please spread the news of Ultralingua.
Even if you are not interested in foreign languages, Ultralingua has a
dictionary of English definitions and therefore is a useful English
dictionary and Thesaurus.
Also, please be gentle with me and the producers of Ultralingua. I
have tested this product very much as a lay person and have informed
the producer of any glitches to the best of my ability. So if you find
any other problems regarding its use, report them in the spirit of
peaceful feedback. ultralingua has been very receptive to what I had
to say in terms of criticism of their product and they remain keen to
have blind and partially sighted user on board.
