I just downloaded Adium and put some messengers on it (yahoo, msn, .mac, then disabled it because it put a bunch of bots that scared me, I didn't ask for that!), and now I'm learning how to set preferences also.
I do know that if you go to Adium Preferences, and then go to Events, you will have a list of notifications set for messages, file tansfers, contacts coming and going. And you can interact with it and makes some changes from there. I was trying to get it to speak "New Message" "Contact On" and so on with the Victoria voice, but I'm not sure I did it right. So I'm no help there. I can't seem to get it to play the speech for me. Still working on it.
