This is normal and sometimes kinda handy to try and recall what you were 
last chatting about with somebody. You can turn it off in the General 
preferences under Messages. There is a checkbox to show recent messages 
in new chats. You can also increase or decrease how many messages are 
shown if you keep that feature turned on.
