actually I haven't found the MacBook air to be much more expensive than comparable subnotebooks, the key word being comparable. the size is one factor, the solid state drive is another, et cetera.
there is a new and welcome trend of cheap subnotebooks coming out like the asus eee and hp mininote both about half the size of a MacBook pro 15 inch. priced around $500-900, give or take some for parts like an SSD.
