One thing about open office I'll make mention of. I could be wrong, but, I
don't believe they have a Power PC version. It's from what I hear, only
Intel. So people like me, who're on a G4, well...

You can save both *.doc (Word 97) and *.docx (Word 2007). There is a file
type drop down menu when you go to save the file. Simply VO "Space" on the
menu that usually defaults to saying ftr and vo down arrow. This works in
Leopard for sure. Also for some more bells and whistles as you put it, you
can get a beta of Open Office dot org writter. I find it to be pretty
stable. The first beta had printing issues and I haven't tried printing
with
beta two, but it has extentions that Microsoft word deffinetly does not,
like Daisy format exporting and the ability to export as Math ML.

You could also try opening the e-book in text edit or open office. simply
vo
"shft" "m on the file and vo "down arrow" until you get to open with. then
vo "Right arrow" to open the submenu. Then VO "Down arrow to choose the
application. This works for any application switching, where you don't
want
to use the current default application to open a file.

It's not control option down arrow to interact. It's control option
shift! down arrow. Then change that down arrow to an up arrow to stop
interacting.
Don't forget that shift key, or you'll just be moving the vo cursor
downward to the next item below the one you're currently on.
if there isn't another Item, you'll wrap back wround to the top item in
that collumn, that is assuming you have that turned on in the Leopard
voice
over preferences. god I wish I had that option at my leasure. Ho, the
