Hi Will,
For any other file format than the iBraille types, you have to use the, import, option from the file menu to open them. It took me a bit of time to figure this out, but using the open option alone will not work.

Ok. First, what are you trying to import? If you are trying to open a text or rtf file you then want to translate, you need to use the import choice and not the, open, one.
