Voice over and mac mail a quick question

If I wish to go through the contents of an e-mail line by line or  
spell words I don't understand because of my hearing locking the keys  
and using the arrows doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? This  
would be helpful when I am reading responses to my campus reader ad.
