Hi,
We were going to look at his options in
iTunes to see what is checked/unchecked, and he couldn't get to
those
options. It only listed iTunes and help. that's it. Cus he
doesn't have
the
radio station list. It's probably unchecked.
Now he's saying what if he threw away his iTunes folder and
downloaded
another version of it!? would that work.
Anyone else have a weird problem like this, with changing the
iTunes
options
and the menu bar not showing all the tabs?
If you're only getting some of the menus displayed, but have the full
iTunes functionality, it's much more likely that your preference file
for this application -- that is the file that keeps track of how you
want your defaults and display settings to be, like what your
preferred Voice, navigation options, and speaking rates are in
VoiceOver -- has been corrupted.
The easy way to check whether this is the problem is to log into
Felix's machine on another account, start up iTunes, and determine
whether everything behaves properly. I create a test account on my
laptop exactly for these purposes so that I can tell whether there is
a problem with an application, or whether there are simply some
settings or conflicts under my own account that are responsible for
problems. However, since most people don't seem to want to do this,
you can attempt to troubleshoot from his existing account.
Try looking for a file named com.apple.iTunes.plist in the Library/
Preferences folder for his account. Close iTunes. Move a copy of the
com.apple.iTunes.plist file to the Desktop with the Move automator
action if you have it, or just copy and paste it., and delete it from
the Library/Preferences folder. Start up iTunes again and see whether
there is still a problem. Your preference settings will be lost,
because a new plist file will be created with the defaults if you
don't have one in the Library/Preferences location when the
application starts.
Again, it could be another preference file that is damaged that is
responsible for the problem -- I've simply typed the name of the most
likely one. It's a LOT easier to troubleshoot this from a test
account. If you find that moving the com.apple.iTunes.plist file did
not sort your problems you can always close iTunes, delete the new
com.apple.iTunes.plist file under Library/Preferences and copy the old
version back there from your Desktop.
This is a lot easier than re-installing the application, and may be
more likely to be the cause of your problems. One complication is
that I'm only guessing at the likeliest corrupted preference file. If
you logged into another account on Felix's machine and found that
iTunes worked perfectly you would KNOW that the problem is with his
account settings and not the application even if you did not
immediately know which of the settings was problematic.
HTH
Cheers,
Esther
