Felix suggests removing your friend as a contact and both of you trying the procedure over again. He says this has happened to him too, where either he or his contact had the question mark showing. He says make sure the option to allow person to see when you're online, or however it's worded, is checked okay.
It's been awhile since I've had any new Skype contact friends! And Felix has had new freinds added more recently, but he can't remember exactly how it's worded either. Good luck, sounds like you did everything right.
