Your suggested method works very well as long as that particular Songs
List has not been sorted, so the entries will appear in time order.
However, if there was a sort done on any of the columns, newly
imported items can appear in other locations. Using "Recently Added"
will pick things up regardless of sort order. Also, if you add items
to your library, such as a PDF file of notes that you made about a
recorded lecture that you also added to ITunes, that item will show up
with NO tags, but you can still find it by looking under "Recently
Added". (There are actually better ways to add such items to your
iTunes library using AppleScripts, but I'm giving you some real-life
examples of cases handled using the "Recently Added" playlist).

Usually when you can't find an imported album in iTunes the problem is
tagging. Try selecting the "Recently Added" smart playlist in the
Sources Table. Then check the tracks in the Songs Table and select
and retag them with Get Info (Command-I) as needed.
