you could deactivate the plugin by defining the OOo generic (gen) plugin via environment
export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen
or by deactivating the native widget set support via environment
export SAL_NO_NWF=1

at least in slackware user interface is extremly slow (and in my case also - quite ugly, but that probably depends on kde configuration)
