I think this would be a good enhancement. I like to keep spreadsheets separate from text documents, drawings,... . I know I can do that without any enhancement to OOo, but it would make it more convenient. It would make it easier to govern where my users save their documents if I could set the default path in OOo to help point them in the right direction. Organization is important with as many documents as get generated in a business. Many general users pay no attention where the files are saved making backup less reliable. Currently, I go through a more lengthy coaching session explaining the file system and how backup works with each new employee. I usually setup a data directory with subdirs for each file type and tell them to arrange their files under those directories any way they want. When an employee leaves and you have to look for something in their files, I think this organization really helps.

How about being able to force saves to be only in certain directories and lock a user out of changing the paths. Maybe that would be to draconian and controlling, but sometimes that may be needed. :-\ I'd like to be able do it sometimes.

I tried to explain this in an issue. Please, vote for it if you like the idea.
