On my work machine (Windows 2000 :'( ) when I first installed OO
everything was fine. Eventually (perhaps after an automatic Windows
"update"?) I started getting the dreaded message:
"OpenOffice.org cannot be started due to an error in accessing the
OpenOffice.org configuration data
The following internal error has occurred: GetStorage, name: "No
Content! "
After reinstalling OO, repairing, etc. all to no avail, I did a web
search (duh!) on the error message and got some advice about moving
folders from the "documents and settings, etc. etc." directory.
These subdirectories could not be found there, but they do exist
under the "user" directory in the installed OO directory (on my
machine under "program files"). After moving them (I imagine you
could just as well obliterate them), OO opened fine. This tip
should be included in your instructions as it can be very
frustrating! Perhaps it is all due to MS trying to subvert the use
of OO???
No paranoia please. :-)
It is different on your side because you didn't install OOo in the
recommended way, first with "setup -net", followed by a workstation
installation (multiuser installation). But of course the tip you found
also applies to your situation, only the place where the files are found
is different.
I assume that many people installed OOo in the way you did, so indeed
that should be considered when the usual advice is given for this error.
Best regards,
Mathias
Thanks very much for your reply. I think the tendency is for people
(like me) to not read the manual ;-) , at least not in great depth, so
it's probably best to warn them in as gentle a manner possible to avoid
what I would also guess is a very typical frustration. I am a big
supporter of the whole idea of open source and would hate to see it lose
advocates because of such a simple thing...
