-----Original Message----- Hello: My name is Lee Baldwin and I am a web developer with a suggestion to make your project more appealing. You need to develop your own email program with a calendar built in to it like Outlook has. I currently use Firefox, Thunderbird and the Mozilla calendar app; however, I have to launch the calendar app while I am in FF or TB and that can be a nuisance. Also if I don't remember to lunch the calendar app then I don't get my reminders or notifications. Is this something that is under consideration?
Good morning! I am sending this direct and to the list. This has been a sore subject on this list for quite some time, so I apologize for the other condescending emails you have received and may receive from others on the list. However, I may be able to help you with your Thunderbird/Calendar problem. Calendar/Sunbird is a pretty dead project; it hasn't been updated in a long time. However, Mozilla has a team developing a sub-project called Lightning. It is still being worked on, but it just recently came out with its first official build, although it is a 0.1 build. There are some bugs, and some features do not work yet, but for the most part it works amazingly well; as well as Calendar/Sunbird anyway. It is more integrated into Thunderbird than Calendar is. It resides inside Thunderbird instead of launching a separate window, so it is more like Outlook in that respect. Also, Lightning's reminders will work as long as Thunderbird is open, even if you are not looking at the calendar portion. This also makes it function more like Outlook. Finally, there is an extension to Thunderbird that allows you to minimize to the System Tray instead of the Task Bar. You can also set it to minimize to the System Tray even on pressing the "X" to close. This makes it superior to Outlook in that Thunderbird/Lightning will silently run in the background, and you will get your alarms/reminders even though Thunderbird is not clogging up your Taskbar. So, even though I'd like to see an OOo PIM, Thunderbird with Lightning does a pretty good job. Make sure you have the most recent version of Thunderbird, uninstall Calendar, and install Lightning. And if you like, install the optional minimize extension. Links will follow. Link to download the most recent version of Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/ Link to download the Lightning Extension: (Right click and save to disk, install in Thunderbird. Firefox will not install this) http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/download.html Link to the "Minimize to Tray" extension (works for Firefox too, need to install in each though) https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/2110/ Hope this helps!
