With so many open source mail clients out there, there is no short term plan
to create a new one, or provide one as part of OOo. I would suggest you give
Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/) and for calandering try
sunbird/lightning (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/).

There are other open source email clients, of course, but I've found this
one to meet all my home needs just fine.
