Use a hyperlink to the file eg on my system I go to insert in the impress menu then hyperlink and put /home/ian/videos/<filename> in the URL box (could link like this eg to YouTube or a web based video source). This will call up the file called <filename> in my video folder on my computer and as long as it is associate with an application it will automatically launch that application to run the video. So you can run any video in any format not just the ones supported by MS. When I click the link on the slide it calls up Totem video player and plays the video. On a windows system it should call up Windows media player for a WMV file so you have the full functions of your player. Close it at the end and move to the next slide.
