I'm assuming you are trying to type a quote symbol.  I used to have Open Office 
but not anymore so I don't remember the exact method of correcting what you are 
getting.  I know there is an option on OO to switch the style of quote marks 
you desire.  Check through the menu or options and you shold find it.  I wish I 
could be of more help.

        When I "shift" and press the symbol ('), I get something that looks 
like two dark lines (I can't recreate). I need to use the quote symbol for a
