I don't claim that readability doesn't matter at all.  Certainly, if you could perform 
the miracle of holding everything else constant,
more readible programs would be easier to maintain.

I don't understand this. More readable programs *are* easier to maintain, whatever could be the everything else.
Do you disagree?
