Just to show that you are not a dyed in the wool academic: Given the choice between:
a) funding for a study that you know will produce 10 publishable papers if no industrial relevance, b) funding for a study that you know will produce 1 publishable paper of some industrial relevance. which would you choose? The second one obviously: any study that you can milk for 10 papers that has no industrial relevance is clearly bogus in the extreme. However if you can get 10 papers out of something that has no industrial relevance, then there is clearly a place for you in senior management because you can surely bullshit! It really is time that people spoke up against the publish or die thing - I'm sick of reading rubbishy papers with no intellectual content written by illiterates. Don't confuse publishing lots with academic quality. L.
