Hi Gerold
The purpose of the study is to examine programming as a design activity -
eg to look at evidence of visualisation, creativity, problem conceptualisation
and problem solving, to see whether it runs through the
understand-propose-realise-evaluate life cycle (with associated feedback
loops)
In terms of reflection I am looking for evidence of reflection-in-action,
and reflection-on-action and at what stages do these occur, and is the
programmer aware of this. At the moment I am concerned
with expert programmers, who are able to offer insights into their own
practice.
The research has arisen out of a long association
with programmers, where I sit there with individual programmers or groups of
programmers wondering what is going on in their heads.
As for outcomes and purpose. Outcome is to start
getting a better understanding of programming as a design or a craft, and to
look at the extent to which design research methods can be used to study it. The
long term aims would be to gain
further insights into the nature of design in general, in relation to
programming in particular, and once we understand it we can offer better support
and training.
