They vary *greatly*. I've just been a part of two international studies with
members from several universities in Sweden (2), Finland (1), Denmark (1), GB
(1), Australia(1), New Zeeland(2), US(>20) and I think I safely can say that
there was not two universities who had the same policy. It varied from
talking to the head of department ("I want to do this", "Okey, fine, bye") to
large very formal application that had to include written statements from all
other participating universities. Some spent about 9 months to get the study
approved while other spent about 3 minutes.
