Having just taken part in a study of highly competent software authors working on their own for a design research pilot study, there is an obvious and conscious tendency in them to use fairly long 'natural' names. Often these names follow well worn conventions that they have become comfortable with over a period of time. One of the stated purposes of using long names is to help with minimising commenting.
