OK, thanks for the advice. I don't suppose it makes much difference, but I'm curious to know whether the particular kind of error which I observed is anything which has been observed before. Also whether the "too many open files" error is a consequence of some known weakness. What I'm trying to find is some assurance that the problem will go away if I use some other classes.
