SYN/HAK (A proposal):
SUMMARY:
Code for Summit County Brigade can schedule
(write:code:build)-a-thons at SYN/HAK.
DETAILS:
I met Persa (for the first time) at Code for America's
Highlight Summit event at the Akron Art Space.
I have known Persa's work from before (through Stuart Smith and
Jon Knapp).
My respect for her went up a few notches when I learned that
she took some time off from web design for living, to practice sustainable
agriculture.
This was a great endeavor, but short lived due to prices today.
A dream for now. (I mention this because she's way ahead of me: I used to dream
about saving our family farm in India, before capitalism got the better of it,
not to mention I was probably a toddler when it was sold off so no one would
have listened to me anyway. Its one thing to say "I'd love to farm" and totally
different to "actually farm" and make a profit.)
Now she is back to web design.
Also: Persa has been organizing Code for America events in
Akron. Her group needs a place where they can meet to discuss the weekly status
of their endeavors highlighted during the 'Highlight Summit' event.
Examples of the kinds of things they wish to plan through this
year and hopefully subsequent years:
CfA's main Summit County Landing Page:
http://codeforamerica.org/2013-partners/summit-county/ (might be out of beta
soon)
CfA's whiteboard before they flew west

http://gsvolt.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/img_2982.jpg (Pedicab was my idea)
ADVANTAGES FOR SYN/HAK:
- Code for America participants/volunteers can consider
becoming a member of SYN/HAK; we can invite them to join our mailing list(s) to
get started remotely
- Learn about what opportunities exist locally, if possible
contribute our energies so that we can get the word out about SYN/HAK in the
community, especially in government.
ADVANTAGES FOR CODE FOR SUMMIT COUNTY BRIGADE:
- A central place to meet up to plan existing and new projects
for Code for America
- Learn about members' projects at SYN/HAK, and share ideas
Finally:
I'd like to get everyone's opinions to see if this could be mutually beneficial
to both groups.
My personal belief is - in the long run, it definitely will be, yes.
Please post your thoughts as you collect them to share with subscribers to the
list regarding this Proposal.
Regards,
G

Hello Gaurav,
I hope all is going well!
I am looking to move forward with Code for Summit County Brigade by expanding
our write-a-thons/code-a-thons/build-a-thons to weekly events, as the HQ @ Code
for America has suggested. I had one event last week at the public library, but
the meeting space was a little too quiet/strict for our needs. We need a place
where people can feel comfortable bringing snacks, having solid wifi
connections, having fun, etc. I was wondering if there would be any way that
Syn/Hak would be willing to be our venue?
Right now we are a smallish group, around 4-6, and I'm doubtful that we would
have this many showing up every week to start. It is the frequency and
reliability of the frequency of meetings that will help this grow over the year
and help get Summit County off to a good start. Please let me know if there is
someone else I should contact regarding the matter, but I do think that Syn/Hak
would be a great partner because of your connection to Makers/Doers, the
community, and of course your attendance at Highlight Summit.
Looking forward to chatting!
Persa
