You’re right on the money Charlie—and you restored a smile to my face, well, at least you wiped the frown of disappointment off.  AND then I got a phone call from a good friend who is head of corporate travel for a communications company.  She explained in travel-agent-detail just what you said: it’s mostly a scam to get you excited and lure you into booking seats, then you find out that there are only 5 “sale seats” available and all of ‘em are in the middle of the night. Hah !!!   Not to say you can’t get a great deal on AirTran, it’s just not as great a deal as first glance seems.   …and speaking of gas prices (your previous comment about tickets costing less than the cost to fill up your car.)
