A customer/friend of mine needs a large (some 10 TByte) online storage. So far the optimal match looks like FreeNAS + zfs + RAID-Z, which is currently in pre-alpha (0.7 nightly builds). No firewall or VPN, though.
IIRC one developer (Chris?) mentioned a number of different pfSense possible flavors, including a NAS appliance.
