Thanks to Hollywood and Pinewood studios, Islamic holy wars are usually associated with bearded men dressed in flowing robes and wielding scimitars. But now the warriors have their own websites. There is quite a range to choose from. A recent email listed half-a-dozen, with links to many more with titles like Taliban Online or The Road to Jihad. Of interest to those following the religious bloodletting in Indonesia is http://malu.ku.org/. It describes itself, in quite stylish print, as "the Official Website of Maluku Tragedy". Even massacres these days have their own portal. Http://go.to/HELL !!! features photographs of the burning of American flags and anti-US demonstrations. The warriors have a sense of humour: the site carries photographs of Indonesian leaders Sukarno, Suharto, Habibie, Wahid and Megawati under the banner: "Go to hell, say no to foreign monster." The Laskar Jihad, the Muslim group that somehow managed to sneak 2000 armed combatants from Java past the 19 battalions protecting the provinces of Maluku and North Maluku, has made particularly elaborate use of the net. At its site – http://laskarjihad.cjb.net/ – readers can catch the latest news in Bahasa Indonesian on how the jihad is faring in Indonesia's eastern islands such as Maluku, donate money to a Hong Kong Bank/HSBC account, survey a list of donors and see a current financial statement. It is an admirable gesture of transparency, but not especially edifying. Donations are listed as coming from the likes of "Amir", who gave 21,000 rupiah ($4), and "Kiki", who gave 50,000 rupiah. According to the balance sheet, Laskar Jihad is running its massive operation in Maluku and North Maluku, where at least 3000 people have been killed since fighting between Christians and Muslims broke out in January last year, on a bank balance of 7.6 million rupiah ($1500). The news on the site, likewise, misses something in the detail. A June 25 item declares: "Christians helped by fully armed Australians." It reports the "fact" that armed Australians had entered the Ambon area was evidence "once again" that foreigners "did not want Maluku to be united under the Republic of Indonesia". In a nice touch of irony, however, the supposed arrival of Australians was cited as proof that President Abdurrahman Wahid's policy of closing Maluku to outsiders had failed. The Australians are joined in infamy by the "cockroach" Americans who had hidden four containers of automatic weapons for the Ambon Christians in a consignment of milk. Then there's the news for June 10: "Galela sub-district taken back by Muslims, 500 Christians killed." Says commander Abu Bakar: "With Allah's help, while Galela sub-district was destroyed by unbelievers, jihad troops were successful in seizing hundreds of traditional weapons from the unbelievers."
