I've already checked there.  Is paging.banner.page.link the only
option?  How is that supposed to work with the page number being set? 
And is there anything equivalent for sorting?

All I'm looking to do is to still have displayTag generate the URLs,
but to use pageNumber=3 instead of page=3, etc.
