In the table...

    <display:table name="statistic" export="true" sort="list" pagesize="366" 
defaultorder="descending"
                   id="highlightTableRow">

and it sorts ascending on the first click on the column header. The second 
click is descending...

Exactly, what I did do was add the "sortProperty" to my column and that fixed 
it. However, what I'm now seeing is that after my page loads initially, I click 
my REQNUM column title and the page just reloads with the ascending order but 
when I click it again then it sorts properly thereafter.

Any suggestions on what may be causing that type of behavior?

But you didn't use the defaultsort and defaultorder, did you?

To answer to previous question, yes you can sort other things than String.
For example, I sort dates with displaytag even if dates are displayed like 
DD/MM/YYYY.
