I would suggest that rather than making distcc setuid, you should just
use sudo instead and just restrict which commands people can run.  Also
allow access to a shell script which will change this.  It'll be more
secure and probably easier to write.

Just to make sure I understand you, are you suggetsing that I give the users sudo access to execute the /etc/init.d/distccd script?
