Yes, there are. Git is a very good tool for distributed source development. But it is a very bad tool for storing versioned tarballs. Imagine that every package maintainer would need to download gigabytes by git clone just to make a simple change in the OpenOffice spec file. That is why most vendors use dedicated storage for package sources.
